Having, by and large, benefited from the insights of Bankedout, dg and sd, I thought I would offer the benefits (?) of my research to the members. Critiques are welcome. I am a sector investor who looks for best of breed within appreciating sectors. This helps reduce systemic risk I use various signals to sell, short or stop loss - like three days above fifty day movong average. I keep an eye on changes in short positions especially when entering a new sector. I follow the Rothchild maxim - get in too late and get out too soon. I usually sell downgraded stocks quickly and I wait five days before considering and upgraded stock.
Right now I am holding commodity stocks (FCX, PCU, RJZ, JJC ( I like copper) Steel AKS X PKX, Oil drillers and equipment MDR HP HAL NBR Energy investvent Trusts SBR BPT TELOZ HGT SJT BTE PWE PGH) for yield. AUTOs F, HMC TM Agribiz TNH IPI POT BG AGU MOS RAILS BNI CSX NSC UPN CNR WAB GWR

Bravo Blygh! I'll look forward to your postings! My one comment is about selling downgraded stocks- hope you follow more timely analysts than some of those that follow a stock down and then issue sells at the bottom end.
You have multiple listings within the same sector of individual stocks- Are you holding equal weight in each of these within the same sector? Do you have a plan to differentiate to fewer winning stocks within a sector? Or are these all intended holds? Cudos for sharing your approach., and Good Luck!! SD

Hi SD Within a sector I usually take the top 1 2 or 3 - I find this is better than an ETF - I check the WSJ and Fidelity for downgrades - they usually preempt big sell offs Blygh

How long do you usually stick with a winning position? Minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years?
How do you define best of breed? Technical, fundamental, or ?
What is an appreciating sector? Price gain over time? Some form of value rising or expected to rise?

In this market I stick with a winning position until the sector starts to change direction - or until I read about a downgrade could be months - could be minutes - best of breed ? Earnings, cash flow, sales, PEG ratio, analysts ratings (I like them below 2) , momentum, short positions, days to cover short sales, rising falling short sales, announcements, conference calls. There are lots of things to look out for before taking a position. It usually takes an hour or so of research

Real estate investment trusts correlate with financials and hence may serve as a proxy if you think financials are too hot.

Talk about real estate as the next potential mover- Look at FNM and FRE today! It figures- where if something is too big to fail........it can't go wrong.- The conventional wisdom suggests that the commercial real estate still had a huge potential shoe to drop, but with the gov't saving everything, it's likely the next best buy-SD
