Over coffee this am, I am scrolling through the Finviz screener and noticed there has been some considerable upside in the oil and gas eq, marketing. ALDW has had a considerable drop- and was sideways for a bit , made a tight range double bottom and Friday broke out higher- This is a textbook move higher that I look for with price above upturning ema's- and higher than the recent base- Since there have been some good movers in this market segment, I'll give ALDW a shot to join in . Stop-loss $8.00

I noticed that BEAV was diverging from Boeing (BA) . For years it was highly correlated with BA but has recently out performed. I suspected something was going on although I expected Boeing to possibly buy it, Blygh

Blygh, Great selection with BEAV. I vote if a horse is disqualified then we should use the default pick. It's not like we're playing for real money. Spiderman

- I would agree that we are not playing for real money- but our orders are reflective of how we would possibly trade in a real account- so I would take a counter point of view. I also use limit orders in real trading, and I''ve had situations where my limit gets filled on a pullback several days after the initial order was placed. It's somewhat similar when you place a stop-loss at a specific amount- The trader has the option of not placing a limit, nor a stop, in the horse race and in their real trading, but that approach also has different consequences. If my stop is listed at $8.00 and price has a gap down open at $6.00 , I have to live with the outcome of where it opened at. Although this was a large gap well above the limit, it is possible (doesn't look likely) that Beav could pullback to the limit price and be resurrected- Just like in the real world. This was a large gap open above the limit, but what if it was just a tad higher above the limit? Say it opened just up $.10 but did not pullback ? Just my 2 bits- Let's consider also IF the opposite would occur. Suppose in the prior week's race where I had NFLX and I placed a limit target to sell that gave me a 5% target gain, and NFLX opened up 20% higher- I think I would have to vote that perhaps I am entitled only to the 5% gain, because i elected to set the limitation of the trade. However, in the real world, such an order would potentially become a market sell order at the higher open -and potentially would execute in the 1st few minutes of trading depending on orders ahead of mine. OR- perhaps at the higher open, the lucky Horse fills at the low price of the 1st 30 minutes? HMMM? That said, I'm game for whatever the majority think is appropriate.

Well IRA, Your patience is being rewarded this week! i would think that -if you had had the time, you would have considered to not continue long a stock in a significant decline- but you based your pick on prior long term history- which perhaps has seen a shift in sector favoritism. And stops-I think they separate traders from Investors when applied- or not- in real world trading- I once -long ago- corresponded with a retired gentleman - must have been Clear station era- that reportedly had taken a very large position in AKAM- something i own just this past week-It must have reported great earnings because it popped- contrary to my other positions! As i recall, he bought into it in the low 40's and it had dropped into the low 20's- Perhaps that was in the decline in 2011- He lost over 50% of the net value in a few months- - but was lucky enough that he got back to break-even 3 years later. He was seeking to supplement his retirement in the stock market and had made a very substantial buy based on ?? and had no stops in place- and found himself an investor-He claimed he had spent $40,000.00 on the initial entry. Well, if he didn't want to give up $4,000 with a 10% stop- he certainly wasn't prepared to give up $20,000 on a 50% decline- That is one of the dangers of individual stock ownership - The expression with stops is "the 1st loss is the best loss": caveat being that the market doesn't care about expressions. or your stops-Just as soon as you decide you will follow an ABC approach- the market will find a way to test your authenticity, your resolve. and your stops will get hit one after another- and weaken your resolve- but that is due to the market cycle we are in- Non-trending and indecisive.
The issue of stops is complex- i used to think that tight stops and tight time frames were the answer- but it doesn't suit my lifestyle as i cannot monitor intraday and thus shoot my toes off one at a time.
Widening stops is not necessarily the answer, because the market is range bound and non-trending- That is a handicap to start off with. And this period of earnings- either you get rewarded or punished if you held. i admit , i had wider stops but tightened them as it appeared selling was the order of the day. That was a good move in hindsight.
Somewhat off tangent- but wide stops are not necessarily safer stops- unless they perhaps make sense chart wise- and then the position size could be reduced.
