I don't care what the esteemed Chamber of Commerce may have spouted. It's focus is not for the benefit of the average American family- just the bottom line of it's corporate citizens.
""Replacing a job that is based in another country with a domestic job does not stimulate economic growth or enhance the competitiveness of American worldwide companies," wrote Chamber executive vice president Bruce Josten in letter to senators." That's what we did when we 'exported' all those undesireable jobs to overseas economies- and it certainly stimulated them.
Dissect that statement to mean that bringing back jobs within the US will cost business's profit line more compared to what business can make by hiring workers in a developing country at 1/5 the wage with no benefits. Why pay workers in Louisana the minimum wage $7.50/hr to make sneakers, when the Vietnam factory cost is 1/3..
Frankly, it just Pisses me off. But there is a Sad Truth that America is experiencing- and it is scary for the upcoming generations, and they aren't even aware of how out of their hands their future is.
As an economy, we have to become competitive on a global scale- We have to have a product to export that the world wants and is willing to pay for. America has largely gained by the inertia of a huge growing economy following WW2, returning GI's taking advantage of GI loans for housing and education gave this country a boost .
During the glory decades following, standards of living improved, education improved, and the US was a leader in the world economy.
While there are still areas where we may excel, perhaps in medicine, and healthcare, and defense/offense, military ; in other areas, we have passed the buck.....
perhaps I'm too negative.....
But I've lived 60 years and worked 40+ and have been both worker and management; and it's sad to say what used to be a proud "american work Ethic" may not have translated down to the recent generations.
The 'struggle' to keep a community's prosperity is a process of slow attrition and settling for less as the new "normal"
My field of work is building construction- At one time it provided a skilled tradesman a good living. Now, the ranks of tradespeople are largely illegal immigrants (false Id's) working
as contract laborers and paid for production only regardless of the new wage and labor standard.
I would estimate this to be 65%-75% of the construction work force in my area. or higher."Smart businesses" work around the basic employment regulations to hire these hard working illegals.
Legitimate businesses cannot compete with the way the immigrants are paid. The standard of living for these construction workers is less than their peers 2 decades earlier.
There is a virtual endless supply of bottom level workers waiting to prove themselves - mostly illegals. I can't fault these peoples , they have taken great risk and $$$ to place themselves here. Americans- Nobody wants to work for less money. Less benefits, less opportunity. For the illegals, this is blessed country without the benefits....
Fact is, that is becoming the new "normal" for our society-
learning to live with less, to lower our expectations, and instead of trying to push higher and succeed more, perhaps we become realistic and just try to give up less and call it a win.
I could expand on this, but time is lacking- The future does not look brighter for those that follow-
Good Luck, SD
